Raphaël August Opstaele (1934-2018)

"In the 1960s-1970s, he was founder and leading figure of Mass and Individual Moving, our most important artists' collective that monumentally set mass and individual moving with the world as its stage. He also founded the Academy of Mecano Art and Inventus.

Imaginative monumental sculptures with titles such as Gloria, Phoenix, Heroes of the Great Paradox, World Wind Organ and Pioneer moved through cities or were placed in art-foreign places in public spaces. Among other things, he trekked into the Moroccan desert with Pioneer, a giant printer powered by solar energy, and represented Belgium at the 1972 Venice Binënnale with the Butterfly Project, in which 10,000 butterflies were released in St. Mark's Square. Bio-art avant la lettre. Originally from advertising, he traded temptation for an art form with a utopian message and a critical-humorous slant.

Raphael was involved with the Verbeke Foundation from the very beginning, and several of his sculptures have stopped here. As silent witnesses that have lost nothing of their power, they are here. In the font he designed, Mecano, he shaped our logo."
